on Rebroadcast: Math Appeal

I had my moments of struggle with math. For me it is all about the teachers. Once in college I enjoyed math until Calculus.  It made no sense and the teacher was less than helpful when approached.

Now that I am a mother to a girl we are very careful about what we say about math.  I don't want her to have that preconcieved notion that math is hard.  I want her to think of math problems as puzzles waiting to be solved.

on Local Library

I am just so sad over the closing of our libraries.  We use our library all the time.  I am a mother of a toddler who loves going to the library.  I could never afford to buy all the books my daughter and I read.  It is so nice to be able to get books for free and it has helped foster a love of books with my daughter.

I would gladly pay a property tax that would fund the libraries for everyone to use.  Our library in Corvallis just adjusted thier hours including closing on Sunday.  We have felt that impact I can't imagine not having a library at all.

on Rx: The Final Health Care Bill

How will this change my life? Well for starters more of my family will finally be able to get health insurance.  But more broadly it will allow so many of my fellow Americans to be covered.  People will be able to worry less and in turn be happier and focus on other areas of thier life. This isn't only about access to medical care/insurance, it is also the overall mental health of the population.

This isn't a complete fix but it is a very good start!

on Rx: Responding to Obama

I agree and have the same questions!

I had 80/20 coverage thru my employer.  That 20% for me to pay is still so high that I still question my ability to go to the doctor.  Now we have switched to a 70/30 plan which has a broader range of coverage but that 30% is huge. I know I am not alone on this.

We need to start thinking of the greater good for everyone instead of "what is it going to mean to me"

Single payer system is a fantastic option!

on Left Behind

I did not drop out of school. If my parents weren't so insistant that I keep going I would have tried to find a different path.  My issue was that I was really bored.  I had a few great teachers but mostly I didn't feel challenged or engaged.  My sole interest was art and the school was seriously lacking in that area. I just decided to wait it out until graduation.

I really think that we need to re-evaluate our classes and school environment.  It sounds like Charter and Alternative schools have an approuch that we should look at more closely.

At the moment I am trying to deside if I want my daughter to attend public schools.
