on High Speed Momentum

If this isn't paid for by the riders, it should be scrapped, like any new, non-essential pork projects that are supposedly tied to "stimulus". We already have a subsidized rail system. When will we realize we can't afford to spend beyond our means? I balance my books at home and it's way past time my government employees had to, as well.

So far, the supposed stimulus, from where the money for this is supposed to come, has done nothing to stimulate our broken economy. Why? Because we're so far in debt and our people have such little confidence in our ability to pay it back that the economy stays stagnant.  Once we start being responsible in DC about how we spend money, the economy will turn around, based on solid fiscal responsibility and control. Let's start with this dumb idea.

on Football!

I agree wholeheartedly. I was listening to the congresswoman from OR talking about political rhetoric from N. Gingrich and the like, as if they cause the actions of a madman. What a horrible way to take advantage of a tragic issue just to continue the divisiveness of our politicians. This was a tragedy caused by a mentally disturbed person. It has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with mental illness and that one gunman. When will our politicians ever learn that they shouldn't take advantage of someone's sorrow to forward their political message. It's disgusting.

on The Meaning of Marriage

My wife and I entered into marriage in our 40s and have no intention of having children. Does Ms. Gallagher feel our marriage is a sham because we're not going to have children?

The belief that marriage is between a man and a woman is born out of religious mythologies and ancient beliefs, yet is now so ingrained in our society that it has become part of civil law. People who love one another should be able to marry, whether they want to have children or not, and whether they're heterosexual or not. We believed for a couple thousand years that slavery was right and proper. We know now that things change and societies evolve in better societies. It's time to stop discriminating against loving, tax-paying adult humans and open marriage up to all.

on From the Conventions: Pain at the Pump

One of your guest made two comments. 1. Gasoline prices are driven by the market, and 2. That higher prices are good.
The price of a barrel of oil has not been driven higher by market conditions of supply and demand, it's been driven higher by speculators. OPEC estimates that the cost of a barrel of oil should be around $70/barrel. As far as higher prices being good is concerned, your guest must be well of. Higher gas prices are not good. They increase not only the cost of running a car, but jack up the prices of everything else we have to buy, starting with the price of a gallon of milk. When you work for moderate wages and can't afford to go out and buy a hybrid, you feel the biggest impact of higher gas prices.
My point is that we need to explore all avenues of energy to alleviate the impact of these increases, to include drilling more, nuclear, wind, solar, natural gas, hydrogen, etc.. When you're having these discussions, don't forget that a good majority of working people aren't able to give their impressions,...because they're working! Thanks.

on Are You Gonna Eat That?

I've been a produce buyer for a major food distributor and currently sell wild greens and mushrooms from this area and ship them nationwide.

Your guest mentioned that when produce is shipped across country, it affects the nutrients in the vegetables. Does he have any scientific studies that prove this, or is this just an opinion?

We're in an area that can't grow many of the produce items that constitute a well-rounded diet and I'm not sure that, if they actually do lose nutrients, the produce which is trucked across the country still doesn't have a great nutritional value. Please cite your sources. Thanks you.

on How Does Your Garden Grow?

Your guest mentioned a link between climate change and the decline of pollinators. Could she please quote her source for that study? I can find no conclusive studies on the subject. Thanks!

on Burning Questions

How much damage did the ELF do to the environment by burning these houses? The plastics and material that burned in those fires is extremely toxic and very harmful to the environment. These people have no regard for the environment. They only want to see themselves on the news. Tre Arrow got his wish. Let's keep him out of society for as long as we possibly can.
