on The Meaning of Jefferson High

Three generations of my family grew up in the Jefferson neighborhood, going back to the 1920s. Years of neglect and experimentation at Jeff have cost the school dearly. It is now time to pay, and the options are two: do everything to make it a top flight high school, or take the cost out on the students, families, and neighbors of Jefferson by closing it. It's a decision made difficult by past inactions. And, really, the first option is the only fair one.

And if some linkage with Portland Community College is to be made, it better be a solid, clearly thought-out, heavily invested-in plan, not some nebulous good-feeling idea.

on Banning BPA

We rarely use foods that come in metal cans, yet had the occasion to do so recently. We noticed the entire inside was lined with a whitish substance. Is this BPA? How does one find out? And what effect does that have on foods, especially acidic products such as diced tomatoes?

on Rethinking Schools

Charter schools, precision testing, parent involvement are critical to improved schools . . . BUT . . . when active parents flock to a few "good" schools, the proportion of uninvolved parents increases at the others. This exacerbates all the problems a classroom teacher faces: behavior, study skills, study habits, resources, hunger, social problems, fewer parents to accompany field trips, computer illiteracy, everything. It all boils down to the involvement of parents, and that needs to be addressed NOW!
