on International Students in Oregon
WASHINGTON (AP) — A young college student from Saudi Arabia studying chemical engineering in Texas purchased explosive chemicals over the Internet as part of a plan to hide bomb materials inside dolls and baby carriages to blow up dams, nuclear plants or the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush
This is a recent example of an "international student" in the USA. Why do we as a culture have such a short memory - Some Somali Born guy did something here in portland - darned if I can remeber what that was...

Newshound,
My intent was not to defame people who have been told they were over qualified, obviously this struck a nerve with you. I can assure you the reason you are underemployed or unemployed is not your over qualifications it is your attitude.
People like you will always work for people like me. My spelling didn't land me my job, nor did it seem to hinder it. As far as my grammar - read your own post "Hey Pot, this is Kettle - Your Black"

As a supervisor who interviews and selects employees for many people in the organization there are some key things I have began to notice:
1 - I have never met someone "OverQaulified" if they were that good they wouldn't be here looking for a job.
2 - By the time a job announcement has posted your odds of getting that position are drastically cut - go to places you would like to work BEFORE they have an opening, then when the resume comes across the desk a face goes with a name.
3 - A fluffy resume can be spotted from a mile away, give me something quantifiable that relates to the job. If you are applying to run a piece of machinery - tell me that you have operated the Kubota 2210 for 3 years, don't tell me that "I am an expert in operating machinery"
At our organization the HR office is the biggest stumbling block, they are paper people - not supervisors so they may cut a resume before the boss gets to see it because they can't be experts in all aspects of an operation - this refers back to come see me before you apply so I can ask them for your resume when it doesn't cross my desk!
You won't get very far trying to get work by hopping on Craigslist and blasting a canned resume to 40 places with a fire and forget technique!

OK, well I will drop a bucket of knowledge on your intellect
2 people from a city of 23,000 is not a reasonable indicator of the city's gun control stance.
Real Irony would require more than .00008% of the population for a sample.

Are you attempting to draw a connection between your assumption that a community would not approve of gun control and two people bombing a bank?
That is a stretch even for you

As a long time Portland resident I remeber the KBC and Piru going at it in North and Inner North-East, I remeber the shooting of Ray Ray and the acts of Lil Smurf... That era started off with less momentum than we are seeing now.
The real problem our city has is a weak mayor - he cares more about bicycles and dog parks then youth being gunned down on his streets. I make that assertion strictly from his actions.

Katie,
Isn't it unfair to the youth currently as they cannot vote, and Adults can?

This may be an unpopular stance, I have held for some time - that being said:
If you require anyone under the age of 18 to purchase a license, pay a fee to the government or give a penny out of pocket to agencies of government at any level - you are being taxed.
I contend STRONGLY that anyone who pays taxes should be allowed to vote - I first paid taxes when I was 14 in 1993, I should have been allowed to register to vote.
Anything less is TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.
So if that Kiddo needs to pay 120 to the Government, he also has the RIGHT to have his voice heard by his Representatives, and to elect who they are.
Think back to the song Summertime Blues "I'd like to help you son but you're too young to vote"

I have a hard enough time stomaching 3.6 billion for the bare bones option, we are in tough economic times and while the bridge will endure for a long time and may be a solid investment, I just think about all the goof looking art that the city spent tax payer money on to make the Max tracks trendy.
I dont want to look at a bridge that Sam Adams has any input on, He may find a way to make the bridge resemble a teenage boy.

Tax increases will not raise revenue, this is flawed thinking.
Raising taxes will drive more business out of Oregon, cause more people to find loopholes in tax code, in short a 10% increase in taxes will not net a 10% increase in revenue.... It's too dynamic.
I agree spread the burden fairly, and stop hitting the successful so hard with high taxes.

Well I may be wrong here but I think you are comparing apples to Volkswagens...
The Federal Government is allowed to run in the red (national debt) whereas Oregon, by it's own constitution and Federal Law cannot run in the negative numbers during it's bi-annual budget,
I do concur the Feds waste Lots of money and I Mean LOTS!
A good point you do raise is when people think of federal money as free money - For example during these cuts agencies were told NOT to cut anything that gets matching Federal funds. I pay federal taxes too, and would like to see the wasteful spending stop on a national and state level

Here we go,
with the rich people aren't paying their fair share... Before you spout off What percent of the state population pays 50% of tax revenue?? Single digits - look it up.
My Salary of 410,000 is taxed to the state at 11% that's 45,119 I paid Oregon last year.
The median 2008 Household income was 50,800 - they pay 7% which is 3500 to the state.
So, I pay what 12.8 average households pay to the state, And I only make 8 time what the average household makes.
Tax Credits given to my Company (not me) are the only thing that keep me in Oregon, Cut the tax credit, and I move to Arizona, or Washington and the State loses all of the Jobs and all of the taxes the company, myself and it's employees pay.
Look big picture, the middle class is not carrying the bag alone.

The state needs to cut 9%, because they have taken in less taxes, because PEOPLE ARE OUT OF WORK or not making as much as the state forecasted.
If the people of the state are struggling, why should we care if the government has to do some belt tightening?
I suppose the irony of the way the system works would be when more people need state support the state has less to work with.

If you post today I request you put your dates of service in to give a better understanding of your frame of reference.
Army 2001-Present
I am a man in the military, I can see a major changes in the Army EO program. Unit Victim Advocates, and Equal Opportunity representilves are appointed and trained in every unit. A strong command emphasis is placed on having an enviornment free of comments, actions, and behaviors like Sexual Harassment, Assault, Hostile work enviornments and so forth.
I think the changes are positive and while reported numbers may be up, I think this could just be a symptom of the system actually working, and letting those who have been assualted / harassed feel comfortable reporting the incident. I can say there is no more good old boy club that sweeps things under the carpet in my unit.
The Army has changed drastically in the last 9 years. We have conducted EO/POSH (equal opporttunity / prevention of sexual harassment) for the 4th time this year and I am deployed in Iraq. This shows a committment to change when we re-enforce appropriate behavior in a Comabt Zone!
