Let's be frank, Portland does not have a distinct sound. I moved here myself from Florida where nearly all venues play Lynard Skynard style rock. However, I draw comparisons to New York City's Broadway scene in that the indie rock scene in Portland is a place where you can and will be noticed. Just like potential Broadway stars moving to New York City, would-be indie rock stars move to Portland because of its plethora of music venues friendly to indie music.
